How to choose and check a used car
Whoever the seller is, these checks come before any money changes hands.
Put the price in context
Compare the asking price with the median price of listings in Morocco (248.000 DH) and with listings for the same model, the same year and a similar mileage. A large gap, either way, calls for an explanation from the seller.
Piece together the history
Ask for the service book and the invoices: they show the services done, the parts replaced and the mileage recorded at each visit. Also ask how many owners the car has had and whether it has ever been in an accident.
Check that the mileage adds up
Compare the odometer with the mileage written on the invoices and on the technical inspection reports. Wear on the steering wheel, the pedals and the driver's seat should match the figure shown.
Check the documents
The registration card must be in the name of the person selling, and that name must match their identity document. Check that the chassis number stamped on the car is the one on the registration card.
Drive the car
Start it from cold, drive in town and then on a fast road, and test the brakes, the steering, the clutch or automatic gearbox, the air conditioning and the electrical equipment. A noise, a vibration or a warning light is something to discuss before buying, not after.
Have it examined by an independent professional
Have the engine, chassis, bodywork and electronics checked by a mechanic or an inspection centre that you choose yourself, and make sure they are independent of the seller.
The paperwork of a sale, in brief
Buying a used car in Morocco generally rests on the following.
- A sale contract signed by the seller and the buyer, with legalised signatures.
- The vehicle's technical inspection certificate.
- The transfer of the registration card to the buyer's name, at NARSA (vehicle registration centre).
- Insurance taken out by the new owner.
This list is general. The documents required, the fees and the time limits are set by the administration and can change: check the current requirements with NARSA or your registration centre before completing the sale.
